Today’s so-called progressives claim a right to the title “liberal”. They are lying, purposefully using subterfuge to disguise what they really are.
The writers of the U.S. Constitution were liberals, now better characterized as Classical Liberals. Classical liberalism is a political ideology that advocates civil liberties and political freedom with representative democracy under the rule of law and emphasizes economic freedom. The ideas of John Locke, Jean-Baptiste Say, Thomas Malthus, and David Ricardo contributed to the ideology that also drew upon the economics of Adam Smith. Neo-classical liberalism argues for government to be as small as possible to allow the exercise of individual freedom.
Target of Opportunity.com notes that “the Constitution is a document that allows Freedom, Independence, Liberty, and Self-Reliance. It does not call for the people to depend on government to provide for the citizens the things that citizens can provide for themselves.”
Today’s “liberals” are far from classical or neo-classical liberals.
Vocabulary.com defines today’s “liberal” as “someone on the left wing of politics”.
Merriam-Webster defines today’s “liberals” as “Believing that government should be active in supporting political and social change, as lacking moral restraint, and as not literal or strict.”
Student News Daily states, “(Today’s) “Liberals” believe in government action to achieve equal opportunity and equality for all. It is the duty of the government to alleviate social ills and to protect civil liberties and individual and human rights. They believe the role of the government should be to guarantee that no one is in need. Liberal policies generally emphasize the need for the government to solve problems.”
The Free Dictionary defines today’s “liberals” as “Favoring reform, (being) open to new ideas, and (being) tolerant of the ideas and behavior of others”, while Dictionary.com defines today’s “liberals” as “Free from prejudice or bigotry (and) tolerant.” Of course these latter definitions of today’s “liberals” are bogus and actually part of the deception. Leftists have no tolerance for opposing ideas, display bigotry against successful minorities, and demonstrate bigotry of low expectation when considering people of color and/or lower social-economic status.
But today’s “liberals” go beyond intolerance, bigotry, and a belief in big government. Many on the far left actually believe that the people have no right to even know what their government is doing. For example, non-voting congressional representative for the District of Columbia Eleanor Holmes Norton, “defended the Obama Administration angrily as she declared that Americans have no right to know what goes on in their government. ‘You don’t have a right to know everything in a separation-of-powers government, my friend. That is the difference between a parliamentary government and a separation-of-powers government,’ Norton claimed during a House Oversight and Government Reform Committee hearing” (TPNN, 5/14/15).
Fortunately this racist, classist, un-American ignoramus can’t vote in Congress.
Today’s conservatives take many forms, including social conservatives, fiscal conservatives, religious conservatives, and constitutional conservatives. They do, however, share a common theme. As stated by Student News Daily, “Conservatives believe in personal responsibility, limited government, free markets, individual liberty, traditional American values and a strong national defense. They believe the role of government should be to provide people the freedom necessary to pursue their own goals. Conservative policies generally emphasize empowerment of the individual to solve problems.”
Clearly, the classical liberal writers of the U.S. Constitution were the opposite of today’s “liberals”. They wrote a four-page document that focused on limiting the power of government and attempting to guarantee individual liberty. The closest thing to a classical liberal in America today is a Constitutional Conservative (i.e., an “Originalist”).
Today’s “liberals” promote big, all-powerful government and individual dependency on that government. They have debased the term liberal and need to find an alternative. I suggest “communist”.
