The Hypocrisy of the Field of Psychology

Any psychologist who is a liberal is a hypocrite. Does that sound judgmental? Well, you are right. This statement is meant to be judgmental.

The Hypocrisy of Psychology

In order to gain a doctorate in psychology, I spent many years in college and graduate school. Throughout those years I was taught to assist people in learning how to manage their lives so that they can reach their potential as human beings. In short, I was taught to help people help themselves. Despite the fact that many of my professors were way off course, I got the core message of my field.

Those professors that I view as being off course were all liberals. Liberals teach people that they cannot meet their potential unless the government or others provide them with a whole variety of programs and entitlements. In effect, liberals teach people to be dependent on the government and on other people.

The liberal agenda and the underlying philosophy of the field of psychology are mutually exclusive. We do no one any favors by practicing in the gray zone between the two views of human life. And, I believe, we do no one any favors by treating them as incapable.

Many psychologists have huge egos. Many are also liberals. Their egos tell them that they are messiahs sent to “do for” others. They play psychologist twenty-four hours every day. They never got the core message of psychology which is to help others help themselves. As a result, many psychologists have contributed to the creation of a “helpless class”.

Unfortunately, many people have taken on this same liberal approach. They “protect” those they see as being weaker instead of teaching them that they have the capacity to take care of themselves.

They enable and entitle others rather than empower them.

It should not be the goal of psychologists to “manage the lives of others”. The minute anyone tries to do that, the “manager” gains the power. Often, this is done for very unethical, illegal, or immoral reasons. At best, entitling and enabling behavior only serves to “boost the ego” of the tragically morally and psychologically weak so-called “helper”.

Of course everyone needs support at times. But no one benefits from being “taken care of” to the degree that they forget how to take care of themselves. When empowered and supported, people can do wonders. When entitled and enabled, they become nothing but slaves to their “managers”. Of course this is what liberals are striving for.

Psychologists, as a group-, have failed society by playing a role in the liberal power play. Any psychologist who does play into the liberal game is a morally bankrupt hypocrite.

About Doc

I am a Psychologist and a veteran of the Vietnam War. I work with abused children and with agencies which try to both prevent abuse and to empower those who have been abused. I feel strongly about child abuse and take every action I can to prevent it and to support the children I work with who have experienced it. I also feel strongly about politics and especially the course being taken by our nation. I believe that America is at a critical point in its development. How we answer the challenges from Islamic fascists and from our own internal enemies in the media, government, and academia will determine America’s future and the future of our children. I believe that if we don’t take the correct course now, America will go the way of Europe and that we will not reach the potential set out by our founding fathers. I believe that it is now getting serious. My gravitar is from "Darkman".
