Knock, Knock. Its the Government…

…and we are here to help!

That is the last thing most of us want to hear. Any time the government says it is going to help us, it costs us. Because–guess what–any money the government has is ours!

Here is the latest “help” that the government is offering. I will preface this with a statement. Most of the farmers I know are deathly opposed to welfare for the poor. But they certainly support welfare for themselves. That welfare takes the form of farm subsidies.

Brian DeVore, editor of the Land Stewardship Project Letter (Minneapolis Star Tribune, 3/27/12) wrote about the crop insurance program administered by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). Crop insurance was initially a good thing. Initiated in 1938, DeVore states that the insurance was “a way for farmers to ride out droughts, floods, and pest infestations.” He adds the following: “beware of the feel-good ‘safety net’ rhetoric: This program is a far cry from what its creators had in mind.”

In Front of a Tractor

While initially crop insurance was put in place to assist farmers whose crops were wiped out by natural disaster, According to DeVore, in the 1990’s the government wanted to increase enrollment. Therefore, the government increased the incentive. As of today, the government pays “around 60 percent of the premium cost.” In addition, in the 1990’s the government added a revenue insurance option, which allowed crop producers to” ensure themselves a target level of income.” Darn, I wish I had that option. I choose my revenue target—can’t beat that.

Some would say this is a good thing. leftists like this kind of thing. What has happened as a result is actually just what they want and don’t want. What they want is for people to be dependent on government. They got that. What they didn’t want is the fact that huge corporations have taken over farming and…get this…they are being rewarded for farming environmentally sensitive land.

Whoa…wait a minute. Leftists cry every day about big corporations and about the loss of environmentally sensitive land but their very own policies are contributing to the increase in the number of huge corporations and to the destruction of their precious land???

Where is the humanity???!!!

Now, let’s shift focus for a minute.

Health Care

President Obama wants all of us to buy health insurance. That insurance will control the type of care we receive. It will force us to purchase that insurance or be fined. In the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, the private sector (of which I was a part) was doing a pretty good job of controlling costs and providing quality health care. Then the government got involved via legislation, regulation and litigation and it all fell apart. Now the government is here to help us all by ordaining that we must purchase it’s brand of health care.

Given the track record of the government, I predict that what has happened regarding farm welfare will happen with healthcare. (I know this is not much of a stretch.) Costs will skyrocket; we will be taxed more; someone, including Princess Nancy Pelosi will actually read the bill; and we will learn that once again the government has screwed us all.

By the way, did I mention the cost of light bulbs?

About Doc

I am a Psychologist and a veteran of the Vietnam War. I work with abused children and with agencies which try to both prevent abuse and to empower those who have been abused. I feel strongly about child abuse and take every action I can to prevent it and to support the children I work with who have experienced it. I also feel strongly about politics and especially the course being taken by our nation. I believe that America is at a critical point in its development. How we answer the challenges from Islamic fascists and from our own internal enemies in the media, government, and academia will determine America’s future and the future of our children. I believe that if we don’t take the correct course now, America will go the way of Europe and that we will not reach the potential set out by our founding fathers. I believe that it is now getting serious. My gravitar is from "Darkman".
